silence in Thromell's room.
In the vampires tactics he will exit his coffin in gaseous form if he hears anything in his room, or nearby (tentacle trap room) but because of the silence above how can he haer anything?
Should a -10 be applied to listen checks and assume he is listening through the walls?
Perhaps there is some other way I have not thought of that allows him to do it?
Anyone?

Re: silence in Thromell's room.
Man, I completely missed that in my last session. Thanks for pointing it out, Arcane. Yeah, silence doesn't seem like the best choice for that room. IMC, I'm changing it to Invisibility Purge, for 3 reasons:
1) Silence kind of messes with Thrommel's hearing
2) The PCs have already been there in my game, so it has to be an effect they wouldn't have noticed the first time. They certainly would notice Silence.
3) One of my PCs has a ring of invisibility, and that just the kind of guy I am.

Re: silence in Thromell's room.
An alternative method is to also have a permanent alarm, keyed to mentally notify Thrommel. Maybe it was a special blackguard spell he researched.
I like the inivisibility purge. Make sure you revise Thrommel's spell list, though. It's unlikely he's gonna use Silent Spell if there's no continuous silence in the area around his coffin.

Re: silence in Thromell's room.
In another view, perhaps Thrommel can hear the footsteps on the floor above him. If you imagine the floor's surface being a barrier to the area of effect for the Silence, then any distance below the surface is unaffected by the spell. Hence, the vibrations of a footfall (steel-toe, hob nailed boots) striking the floor would be transmitted through the floor downward (outside the spells area of effect) unhindered.
The person above can not hear his own footsteps because of the Silence, but Thrommel below hears the vibration of footfalls transmitted through the stone.
I'd definitely give a -10 to any Listen Check because of the stone barrier, but the DC for a warrior in platemail walking on the stone surface would be 0, but rogue could use the Move Silent skill and might not be heard by the dreaded vampire below.
I don't know if that's right, but that's what I did.

Re: silence in Thromell's room.
Thrommel could tie small bells to the ceiling such that the floor vibrations would cause them to ring.

Re: silence in Thromell's room.
Silence blocks sound (vibrations). Check out a thread on Silence from the Magic forum. Trithereon's idea would also work.
