A Nice Suggestion
Never, ever, run a solo campaign through this module!

I only have one player. He's a half-drow/half-celestial fighter 6 with much more money than average for his level and better stats than usual. He has a unique template on him that gives him spell-casting (he progesses like a bard, but he has an incredibly limited spell list that he doesn't get to choose from...I assign new spells learned and they're treated like spell-like abilities). He's intelligent and doesn't metagame. He went through the Sunless Citadel with only one encounter that actually threatened his survival. He thinks through everything. He makes allies out of enemies (never fought a single kobold, allied with them and made a mutual treaty between them, the goblins and the people of Oakhurst). He's generous and stays with his alignment. He'd be much better equiped if he didn't play Robin Hood so much and re-distribute the wealth to the poor.

He spent eight hours in Hommlet (three days in game time) before even setting out to the Moathouse. He made allies everywhere he could. Elmo, the temple of Ehlonna and the temple of Pelor are backing him (and both are already indebted to him). The monk that runs the milk market likes him. Ingrith likes him.

Erky Timbers accompanies him almost everywhere he goes. Xoad is now partnering up with him. The PC keeps him sober and Xaod has begun to appreciate that.

But none of all that saved him from the first dice roll of the entire day: Chat's death attack.

Okay, did Erky and Xaod take out Chat? I imagine Erky would want to have him ressed if they did.

But honestly, any campaign with a single player is bound to run into this kind of problem eventually. Even if that player's character is as unique as this one.

Re: lol
I fudged it. He was one below the DC for the Fort Save, so I just told him he made it. He still took a massive amount of damage from crit + sneak attack. Xaod smited before Chat could escape and then Chris full attacked him with his shocking longsword. Chat died before his next turn.

Edit: I told it all to Chris after the session ended. He feels vulnerable now.

So?
Having your PC feel "vulnerable" is a good thing. Gives him a feeling of accomplishment when he survives.

Still, you might want to consider changing how deadly you make your campaign. This is a great opportunity to take prisoners that most of us don't have. If we capture a PC, it splits the party and that's no fun for anyone. For you, you can focus on the just the captured PC and his attempts to escape.

For example, Chat could have used a paralyzing attack rather than a lethal attack, planning to kill that sod Xaod and then turn the PC over to either Dunrat or Yssalanish.

You can even go so far as to have all those evil clerics pack Cure Minor Wounds to stabilize characters below 0 for capture and interrogation later.

hmm
a real test for this character is fighting a Big U. If a wizard cannot defeat big U alone, then how can a fighter defeats on its own?

Whoa, he is a fighter? If this guy actually defeats Imix on his own, he should be nominate for Hall of Fame.

Re: hmm
If he defeats Imix, I'm going to have him absorb the Elemental Prince's power and possibly become Divine Rank 0.

I thought about having Chat hit him with the paralysis or maybe DA one of the others. This might have been the case had two things not happened.

1. Chris has been just a bit too vocal about thwarting EEE cult members in Oakhurst and seeking revenge for his adoptive brother's murder. He made the mistake of telling Elmo everything while Chat sat at the table behind him. He even mentioned that the priestess of Ehlonna (Jennithar Rhengold) was the wife of his now deceased brother (I have so many character hooks its surreal).

2. Jaroo caught Chris snooping around in the Grove. He pinged him with Detect Thoughts and got a glimpse of a memory in which Chris valiantly fought another Druid in sacred garden. Jaroo recognized the druid as an ally and fellow cult member, Starla of Oakhurst and was enraged to know Chris killed her. After rebuking Chris about wandering in his home, he contacted Chat and sent him to kill this newcomer as soon as possible.

Chris roleplayed the reasons for his attempted murder. I was left with no logical choice (should I use that much logic with an insane cult?) but to go for the DA kill.

The ambush came while Chris was discussing "dragon tales" with Ol' Del (being from Alabama, I had little trouble giving him the impression that Del was an unwashed hillbilly with little or no education. I imitated Boomhoward from King of The Hill for his speech patterns and tone. "Dat dang ole dragon swooped down from de dang ole sky and ah wuz more sceered den a cat in a room full o' rocking chairs!"). I'm pretty sure he dismissed Del as crazy. Del fainted when Chat appeared from nowhere and skewered Chris with his rapier. After dispatching Chat and getting some healing from Erky, Chris opted to return to Hommlet. He berated himself quite a bit because on a chance hunch, he had pinged the entire Inn's dining hall with his detect evil spell-like ability after Chat's suggestion of heading out the ruined Temple. He caught both Chat (who had little reason to use his scroll that day) and Maridosen. He wants to tell Elmo about all this and to confront the barkeep.

He may find himself fighting the cult in the millhouse before hitting Big U.

Re: hmm
Those are good reasons. However, in my experience, those are good reasons to keep him alive and torture him. There are things far worse than death like tossing him, bound and helpless, onto the top of the obelisk in the moathouse, or feeding him live and kicking to the grell.

Anyway, sounds like a fun campaign! :)

Re: hmm
I think he can take Big U by himself. I'm reasonably confident he can take him with Xaod and Erky's help. Erky's a Cleric 3.

Reasons Chris can take Big U:

- He has wings, so he can evade the dust cloud when U does his hovering strategy.

- Due to 34 point buy, the half-celestial template and some gauntlets, Chris has a 22 Str and 18 Con. Since he's the only player, I let him take 10 hit points + Con modifier each level. This leaves him with 84 hp. He can dish out some damage with his Focused & Specialized longsword (always fights two-handed) and can take a great deal in return.

- AC through the roof! He wears a +1 mithral chainshirt and he has a 20 Dex (+4 racial). This gives him a AC 20 before he throws up dodge and uses his Pro: Evil spell-like ability.

- Electricity resistance 10. That's 10 less damage from each breath attack. This, unfortunately, goes both way because the shocking aspect of his sword is useless against Big U.

This will be interesting.

Edit: I just remembered that he now has access to Chat's buckler (assuming Xaod or Erky don't claim it or maybe Elmo confiscates it). It's possible his AC will go up 2 more points.
