Starting out with a BIG group
Big for me at least. I posted a similar question before, but things have changed. I have a group of 6 PCs with very good attribute scores. 5 of them have played as a group for the better part of 10 years. No clerics or spell casters (though there is a multiclassed character with 2 levels of Bard).
We're finishing up a very fun and enjoyable run on Vampire. The thing is, the Vampire campaign was thouroughly enjoyed by all and we hardly ever fought anything. Maybe once every other week. It should be noted that I didn't run the Vampire game, but have the grand task of following it. It seemed so fun because there was so much opportunity to roleplay our characters, in this particular story, and only once a session did our characters meet up as a group, though we were hardly ever alone.
D&D, almost by definition, is fighting or combat. So, is there a way to combine a good story (like RttoEE), opportunities for enjoyable roleplaying, with combat, with 6 PC's in mind?

Re: Starting out with a BIG group
There is plenty of opportunity for roleplay in Hommlet, and Rastor too if you're willing to flesh it out. Once you get to the CRM its more of a hack-fest. You can certainly negotiate your way around some encounters, but eventually most everything devolves into combat.
If you really want to pump up the roleplaying aspects I'd consider retooling some of the areas between the bridge complexes and temples. They tend to be filled with semi-random collections of combat encounters, some of which work well for roleplaying (e.g. orcs, naga) and some of which don't.
