About to start a new campaign
Hello all,

First time poster, long time lurker.

I am gearing up to run a new campaign based on RttToEE. the setting will be the realms and the characters will start out at first level and are as follows:

Human cleric of Tempus
1/2 Ogre barbarian (allowing to start at ECL 2)
1/2 gold dragon warmage (currently 1st level of 1/2 dragon template with human HD--no actual warmage levels yet)
halfling rogue
One yet to be determined (player currently out of town)
I may possibly run a 1/2 elf swashbuckler npc based on Jack Sparrow (looking for feedback whether or not this is a good idea)

My dilemma is this: I don't actually have the module yet. Due to it being out of print, I had to get it off ebay and it was not shipped until today. We are planning to start this Friday and I was wondering what kind of hooks to use on this bunch? Maybe this will be clear to me when I receive the module but right now I am scrambling on establishing tie ins.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This module is not one to leap into without having done a fair amount of up-front reading. I'd say you want to have read the background, all the stuff on Hommlet and at least have a concept of what's out at the Moathouse, prior to the first session. Without time to build that up, may I suggest you use your first session just to get the characters to Hommlet.

Perhaps they're caravan guards whose employment terminated in Hommlet. You can drop hints about the place's past while they're en-route, and perhaps even have them glimpse a dragon (high in the air, can't tell size or color) as teases. Anyway, I'm sure you can come up with something good--a distant relative in Hommlet, some church from faraway wants to know whatever happened to Lareth the Beautiful and sends a team to investigate, whatava 8)

If you do get the module in time, make sure you bone up on how Utreshimon works, specifically that hover ability. Very, very nasty; it takes some restraint to avoid a TPK :evil

Welcome to the club!

A little bit of background for you. The adventure starts in Homlet and is 25 years after the destruction of the original Temple of Elemental Evil.

You will eventually need to get the party to Homlet.

Some possible hooks:
Dreams of something bad happening.
Evil Ochre robed Clerics looking for relics.
Perhaps a map that is discovered in a bad guys lair that has Homlet on it.

Um, the adventure also starts off assuming four 4th level PCs - people have either started with PCs at that level, or run adventure(s) to take them from 1st level to 4th level. Many people have used "The Burning Plague", others "The Sunless Citadel", so if you've got either of those, you should be able to draw on others' experience here about how to Foreshadow the module proper in those adventures.

I don't think I'd recommend running an NPC that you are personally attached to; as an interesting foil for the party that advances the storyline, sure, but as a substitute for being able to play in the adventure yourself while being DM at the same time - very, very hard. But welcome to the boards anyway, monkbane, and I hope you find it as useful as I definitely have... :)

Whoa. You have four levels to spend first. ;) Don't let them into the module until that human cleric hits 4th level. They'll be butchered!

I ran my folks through Crucible of Freya and Forge of Fury. My 7 member party is now all 4-5th level, and it seemed to work pretty well. Nightscale in FoF mauled the party so they were VERY cautious of Big U.

Thanks for the input guys.
I don't plan on jumping into it until the PCs are 4th level. I was just wondering if there was any ground work that should be started now while they are first level. Is there any way to tie Tempus into this? I have read most of the FR conversions and he is not mentioned. I don't know if this is even possible, just a thought.

Oh man, talk about silly assumptions. I'm so used to folks coming in with "my characters are all 4th level, we're ready to go" that I've completely neglected the actual start of the game! :x

I and others have done the Sunless Citadel/Forge of Fury combo to get the characters to 4th/5th level. You can tie in the dwarven history from FoF with that in the CRM with very little work. You can also connect the troglodytes in FoF with those at the CRM, and possibly even reference some "mission at the old town of Hommlet" as a nice hook.

As Slonk notes, the encounter with Nightscale at the end of Forge of Fury can be a good warning for the PCs that dragons are nasty, and give them a fighting chance against Utreshimon.

I have so many links and hooks between the Sunless Citadel and RttTEE that I can effectively pretend its all one module.
