Give Those Trogs a Bath
How do you all handle the stench effects with multiple troglodytes? According to the rules, it appears that characters would have to separate saves against each troglodyte. This seems a bit whacky. Even characters with good fort saves are going to have trouble making four or five fort saves in a row.

What have you all done?

Eventually they will get sickened then. The effects of being sickened are not cumulative, so it can't get any worse. It makes sense to me that a lot of troglogdytes will make it difficult to not be sickened by the smell. Btw, I recommend the feat Ability Focus (stench) for a trog that you want to smell particularly awful, like Ukemil or Reokallitan. :)

Re: Give Those Trogs a Bath
In a recent (non-rtttoee) game, my players knew they were heading into a big fight with a bunch of troglodytes. It had already been established that Delay Poison would not fend off the stench, since the stench is not technically a poison. The party bard had a new idea.

"Trogs only stink when they're angry or frightened, right?" he asked.

"That's what the book says," I replied.

"Well, what if I use my bard music to soothe them?"

This was a poser. If a trog gets into a fight, of course it's going to get angry or frightened. On the other hand, bard music is magical stuff.

Eventually I ruled as follows:

1. The song is basically functioning as an Inspire Courage on the trogs, only it doesn't give them any bonuses.
2. The trogs get a Will save similar to the Fascinate ability.
3. The song has no effect on the trogs except for pacifying them enough that their stink isn't aroused.
4. The trogs get another save as soon as they are damaged.
5. The player has to be creative enough to come up with the concept for a song that troglodytes would find soothing. (He sang it. It was all about little lizards snug and safe in their reeking caves. It was awful, but I'm sure troglodytes would love it.)

The bard music proved moderately effective. It kept the low-level trogs from stinkifying the party upon first contact. However, the trog leadership made their saves and successfully stenchified everybody but the party rogue when the battle was really joined in earnest. In the end everybody was pretty satisfied, especialy the bard who had been feeling a little pointless and unnecessary lately.

Just had to share a story!

Interesting Take
That's an interesting take. By that same notion, Calm Emotions should have the same effect on the trog stink, right?

Re: Interesting Take
I should think that Calm Emotions would work the same way. However, that spell is dispelled immediately upon the creature taking damage. Also, that spell wasn't available to my players.

Re: Interesting Take
In 3.5 calm emotions is disrupted on all those affected if they see an attack on anyone. But I still love the spell.

3.5 SRD..

This spell calms agitated creatures. You have no control over the affected creatures, but calm emotions can stop raging creatures from fighting or joyous ones from reveling. Creatures so affected cannot take violent actions (although they can defend themselves) or do anything destructive. Any aggressive action against or damage dealt to a calmed creature immediately breaks the spell on all calmed creatures.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of All Who Threaten it.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure that I was interpreting the rules correctly. It should add some difficulty to the Earth Temple.
