New run at the module.
Well I have a new group of players going through RttToEE. My first group that I ran the module with gave up on the mines after the wizard that was carrying all of the keys was captured. One of the PCs had been turned by the Demonstone and the group split up.

Anyway, I have a new group heading into the module full thrust. I started them at 4th level and gave a little background of what they had been doing to start them out.
The campaign is set in the Forgotten Realms, and I am using Archenbridge as my Verbabonc. If they want to go an even bigger city they could always try Selgaunt.
Here is the group:

Sun Elf Cleric 4 of Hanali Celanil
Wood Elf Fighter 2 Ranger 2
Moon Elf Rogue 1 Monk 3 of the Old Order
Wild Elf Sorceror 4
Earth Genasi Fighter 3
2 yet to be determined

I have a question though. The group is using the destroyed tower in the Moathouse to rest after they ahev been warned down from many battles. Now with Big U gone will people from inside the lower levels come out and search for the PCs. I have thought of bringing in Chatrilon and using him to ambush them here. What do you all think I should do? The group has already been downstairs and killed a ghouls, skeletons, gnolls and a cleric, I think Gren is the one in area 24, and they took the stuff in area 24.

Thanks,
Lav.

Re: New run at the module.
They would definitely try to get back the stolen items. They would probably first send a scout to find out where they are (if the gnoll ranger is there he has hide and move silent skills) and then come back and report the location. All the clerics and controlled undead and remaining gnolls would be used to hit the party. Heck, even the insane Festrath might be convinced to come up and get the items for his god, though that may be unlikley considering the Grell.

Players need to learn that this game is not like a video game where the NPC's remain in their spots waiting for the PC's to return, only attacking when they come into range or view.

Be sure to bolster the undead before the attack, retrying weak attempts before they head up, and likewise, be sure to use both staircases to cut off the pc's. The clerics in the Moathouse are both ruthless and efficient. They haven't survived long in this gruesome cult by picking flowers and drinking tea.

In addition
In addition to the scout, they'll also send a messenger to Homlett to recruit aid from Chat and from Dunrat's crew. Jaroo and Maridosen can stay in town to keep an eye on things in Homlett.

I'd suggest Geynor Ton as the messenger...since with Gren dead I believe he's the remaining human.

Festrath is koo-koo for Cocoa Puffs...he's never coming back up.

If they think the PC's are topside, I can't see them sacrificing their messenger without invisibility or something. They are fanatics, but they aren't stupid.

Re: In addition
You think Dunrat would come to the moathouse with the rest of his crew.
Also, how much time do you think it would take for all of this to happen. They are locking themselves inside the tower to rest. This is where I will start the game this saturday. I will send the Gnoll ranger up to check things out and then invisibly send Geynor Ton through the front entrance to go back to Hommlet to get others. The scouting and then the sending of Ton should only take the first 30 minutes of rest time if that. That gives Geynor Ton the rest of the night to get to Hommlet and tell the others. How long would it take for them to get back? The Moathouse is 12 miles from Hommlet, so it would take a few hours to get there. I am thinking the people from the lower level would attack around third watch close to the morning time.

Invisibility
Where are they getting the invisibility from? Is there an available potion?

They could also launch a diversionary raid at the PC's with some undead to cover Geynor's escape.

Sanctuary would probably be a worthwhile attempt. The diversion with sanctuary even better.

Bead of Force
Well the battle went down last night in the area underneath the Moathouse. The PCs had defeated everyone except Geynor Ton, Vacra, and Dunrat, but they were all out of useful spells and thanks to the monk's improved disarm they were losing weapons fast. Anyway, the last thing Dunrat had on him was the bead of force. Dunrat threw the bead and it went boom and created the Otilukes resilient sphere which entrapped three of the players, almost killed one, and separated the monk from the rest of the party to fight alone. This is because the group decided to take the fight out into the 10' hallway. Anyway, I had trouble interpreting the rules to the bead of force for DC saves. I couldn't tell if it was just for the Resilient Sphere or for both the explosion and the sphere. What I did was make everyone in the blast area make two saves for the bead.
What I need to know is what is the true interpretation of this poorly written item.

Re: Bead of Force
I personally suggests that they made a desperate attempt to contact Hedrack for personal assistance. They may be scared, but the "Operation Hommlet" is too important to abandon. For this case, Hedrack will send an assassin.. either to kill off the remaining cults and collecting items, to SEVERLY annoyed the party members (will be a good challenge) and recruit Chat along the way (Hedrack can use another assassin), or Varchan can get the ideas of the PCs and will use his position of powers to send an assassin to see just how capable those players are.

The final decision is yours.

It's one save, DC 16, and it negates the bead's entrapment effect. The damage cannot be negated as it is not part of the resilient sphere.

Well, Chat was there, but he fled when he was down to like 15 hit points. He almost killed tow of the players with sneak attack, but he was quickly ganged up on and he retreated and didn't come back.

I sincerely hope you're not referring to Victor or Bethe - at their current level, the party won't even see it coming.

I'm afraid I also disagree here - sure, the "relics" are significant to the cult, but there's no indication that they're critical to the required rituals. I'd be more inclined to say that it's more like a minor project being run by Ukemil - that might explain the presence of Ysslansh in the Moathouse better.
