Be vewwy quiet, I'm hunting PC's
Okay, two questions. First off, we've discussed Hedrack's reactions to the destruction of two elemental temples many times. First he sends Victor and Bethe, then the invisible stalkers, then Ukemil, then for the really brutal a planer ally'd glaberazu, right? The question is, I've seen it so many times I assumed it was canonical, but I can't find it in the module anywhere. Can I get a page reference from someone?

Second, the assassins are now up to bat to kill the PC's. From their description (wearing the masks, etc) I feel that they are loyal worshippers and will do their best to carry out their assignment. But they don't want to die. They figure if they can kill a PC and escape, Hedrack will be relatively pleased and not torture them slowly. But they are well aware that a TPK is beyond their means.

Also, they can't attack in the party's sleep because they almost always camp with Rerrid's clan in the dwarf temple.

I've got two ideas I'm kicking around for them. First, they ambush the party when they return from adventuring in the fire-elemental summoning room. Second, they trick the PC's into waking up the bebilith, gang up on the weakest party member in the ensuing chaos and then try to escape.

Oh, BTW, I'm definetely changing their spell selection. Fangs of the Vampire King from BoVD looks cool, as does Lightfoot from the Miniature's Handbook.

It's terribly hidden. It's on page 39, right hand column, 2nd paragraph. Note that the Glabrezu is not canonical, but the rest is.

And by what is written there he only sends one of the assassins and keeps the others in reserve.

"Also, they can't attack in the party's sleep because they almost always camp with Rerrid's clan in the dwarf temple."

With their great disguise checks and disguise self, they might very well walk right into the camp to get a nighttime assassination attempt. I would always have them use disguise self as it keeps the PC's from figuring out exactly how many assassins there are. If they get hit by the same assassin three times and each time he is a different race, then the PC's will be far more worried. I also gave them a refuge stick (from Varachan's supply) each time in case of emergency. No where is safe.

PS I dropped the lilac mask because I thought it was a silly idea. With their use of disguises, it actually would hurt more than help.

Sounds good. I think I'll just send Victor. His attack will be probably a spur of the moment thing I work in where it seems appropriate. Bethe will be among those dispatched to Homlett to recover Lareth's body.

Yeah, you might want to try infiltration tactics at first. Have Victor try to befriend the group or something. Then if that doesn't work he can flee and fall back on standard hit and run tactics. Check out my alternate goblin assassin too if you want to have a bit more difference between Victor and Bethe.

Re: ...hunting PC's
I used Cordo's goblin Gez to very good effect. A guest player joined us for a session, and played Gez as Sidly, a new halfling member of the party. I gave the player his mission from Hedrack (primary: assassinate the cleric, secondary: retrieve Tessimon's tentacle rod from the rogue), and let him make his own plans. It was a lot of fun.

In fact, something like 4 real-time months later, when they met Varachan, the players got very confused when Varachan started talking about how Bethe had it out for them because they'd killed her lover Gez -- they'd never heard of Gez, and only knew him as Sidly. :)
