Waking Thrommel from his coffin
IMC, Thrommel is currently slumbering in his new coffin for 1d4 days, having lost his old one. The party will be attacking him before he wakes (in one game day). What do you think it would take to wake him? (For details, see my log.)
The coffin is hidden inside the Infernal Device. I'm thinking I'll initially give him a Listen check with modifiers of -10 (sleeping), -5 (through the coffin as per a door), -5 (the device is noisy, causing 'distraction') vs DC0 if the party is talking, or vs Move Silently if the party is sneaking.
If a party member gets "Infernally Deviced", I'm thinking I'll give him a new listen check vs DC-10 (as per a battle), though I might give the PC a concentration check against the damage from the device to try to stay quiet.
If the party removes the coffin from the device, attacks the coffin while it's in the device, or opens the coffin to attack him, should he wake immediately? Should I give them some time before he awakes? Or do you think I should make some kind of check to wake him?
Bethe currently lies in a second coffin beside Thrommel. She has been spawned, but has not yet risen as a vampire (she won't rise for 2 more game days). I'm guessing that that means that nothing can wake her, she's actually a dead body, right? And all the party has to do is destroy the body to keep her from rising as a vampire, correct?

Re: Waking Thrommel from his coffin
"What do you think it would take to wake him?"
Your listen checks, etc. seem Spot on. You could also add a new spell to the Blackguard list:
Vampire's Slumber
Abjuration
Level: Blk 1
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Area: 20-ft.-radius emanation centered on a point in space
Duration: 2 hours/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
Vampire's Slumber sounds a mental alarm each time a living creature of Tiny or larger size enters the warded area or touches it. A creature that speaks the password (determined by you at the time of casting) does not set off the alarm. The alarm alerts you (and only you) so long as you remain within 1 mile of the warded area. You note a single mental “ping” that awakens you from sleep but does not otherwise disturb concentration. A silence spell has no effect on a mental alarm.
Astral creatures do not trigger the Vampire's Slumber.
Vampire's Slumber can be made permanent with a permanency spell.
Give him a scroll of the above so that the PC's know what it was that triggered him waking up.
"If the party removes the coffin from the device, attacks the coffin while it's in the device, or opens the coffin to attack him, should he wake immediately?"
Definitely. If someone picked your bed or hit it with an axe, I'm sure you'd wake up, too.
"Should I give them some time before he awakes?"
I typically make someone 'wake up' as a full round action.
"I'm guessing that that means that nothing can wake her, she's actually a dead body, right? And all the party has to do is destroy the body to keep her from rising as a vampire, correct?"
Yes to both.
Q: Why can't Thrommel sleep at night?
A: Because he was coughin'!
