What's on Hedrack's nightstand?
Hedrack's shelf has a tome of understanding +1.
This is a place where realism conflicts with game balance. On one hand, the PC's deserve such a mighty reward for slaying Hedrack. On the other hand, if he had such a book, why wouldn't he read it?
Here are my possible ideas but I'm open to others.
1) He just acquired it and hasn't had time, what with the PC's assault on the ToAC and the search for the Champion. (Downside, if the champ is found and the PC's take several days off...he reads it.)
2) He's hoping to trade it to the First for a spot on the doomdreamers roster.
3) It and the vacuous grimoire have identical bindings and he's forgotten which is which. (Downside...he's got any number of slaves to find out for him...the hard way.)

He already read one of such books a while ago and realizes that this might be a good bargaining tool someday

Re: What's on Hedrack's nightstand?
The last explanation is actually "true", according to the old ToEE module.

Siobharek, which "last" explaination -- that they have identical bindings, or that he's already read one himself?

Also, from a rules perspective inherent bonuses do not stack unless you apply all 5 in quick succession. Most likely, he would save the book until he had the ability to apply four more bonuses (via miracles or wishes most likely). This would be the powergamer option, though Hedrack doesn't seem like a powergamer to me.

Rar!

Re: What's on Hedrack's nightstand?
msherman, the latter: Hedrack had a Tome of Understanding (or something) in the old module.
Actually, its presence might also be a tip of the hat to oldtimers playing the module.
