Im reading this section and I can't help but wonder;
why does he not wear armor!!!!!!!!!!! For real man. 66 hp and an AC 20 against lvl 8 PC's. I know his spell powers are sexy, but any thinking outsider will put on some protection!
Would a Mithril Breastplate +2 (or +3) be over the top?

Does he need it? It took forever for my party to get anywhere close to Riu to hit him; he spent the entire fight either hiding behind a table, or up on the cieling, invisible.

Well. Why won't he have it? It would be quite stupid not to have such a thing. Mithril Breastplate +1 and a +1 Greataxe would be on par with Oomarthis...

One possible reason that he wouldn't have that treasure is that someone else has that treasure.
One way of balancing treasure across encounters is to load up one NPC at the expense of other NPC's. Monte wrote a god column on this in his DM's Only column this past week.
So maybe Riu is taking one for the team. Plus his spell-like abilities are a lot more fearsome than his combat prowess. Armor would also beg the question of how he changes shape with all that stuff on.
