First Death
Well, we had our first death last night. The party monk got paralyzed by the Chuul and dropped into the Stalagos. Since a paralyzed person can't hold their breath, he only lasted three rounds under the water. The party tried to save him, but couldn't get to him in time. I had really been talking about the difficulty of the module, so they were prepared for some dying.
I got bored this morning and wrote up a little parody of the Beetle's song "Hey Jude".
Hey, Chuul, don’t feel so bad
You took the monk and made him drown
Remember, next time not to grapple
Then you can take a few more of them down.
Hey, Chuul, don’t feel let down
You were made to go out and get them
The minute they start sneak attacking
Then you begin to lose the battle.
And any time you feel the pain, hey, Chuul, refrain
Don’t grapple everything in sight
Well don’t be the fool and play it cool
And make their world a little wetter.
Hey, Chuul! Just let them drown
You have paralyzed them, now go and eat them
Remember, a tentacle to the heart
Then you will start do so much better.
So constrict them and draw them in, hey, Chuul, begin
You were waiting for someone to play with
And don’t you know that it’s just you, hey, Chuul,
Those Kuo-toa didn’t help at all.
Hey, Chuul, don’t take it bad
They outnumbered you five to one
Remember you left them one man short
Now you can start to decompose.
Chuulie!
Chuulie, Chuulie, Chuulie

Okay, but
Okay, but if I hear la la la la la la la la la la hey Chuul! about 413 times, I'm going to figure out a way to release Tharizdun myself.

Re: Okay, but
Uhhhh... wow.
I had my first death last session too. Except it happened a lot earlier in the campaign for me. The Fighter in the party witha 7 Int. couldn't figure out that losing ability points every time he went into the crystal under the Moathouse was bad. So, he failed his fort save and was blown to dust. If that doesn't make it bad enough the party decided then that they would test the artifacts at the alter and ended up killing the sorceror to the evil alter. Man life was tough for him. Especially since the player that was playing the sorceror wasn't even there that night. Oh well.

*Warning! Warning! Warning, Will Robinson!*
Man, you guys are brave I've had one experience with this and vowed never to allow it happen again, even if everyone DOES really, truly understand that the character being NPCed might D I E - intellectual comprehension is one thing, the emotional impact is another
Caedrel, who has had to come up with highly imaginative things for PCs to be doing when their player can't attend...

Re: Okay, but
I always use some variation on "sick in bed".
After all, it's not like the players are ever going to roleplay their characters with a stomach flu while they're present.

Re: Okay, but
"Minding the horses" seems to be the general excuse with my group. Where you hit a snag is when the session finishes mid way through an encounter. Strange how a single vulnerable player can carefully find his way to the party deep within a dungeon without risking a single random encounter
Then the next week he suddenly disappears again.
As for deaths, my party hasn't even made it to the CRM and they've had 3 characters die
