Tabernacle of Utter Darkness
Good morning to everyone, this is my first post on this forum. I'm currently running RttToEE (although in the FR setting) and I have a question regarding the Tabernacle of Utter Darkness (Level 9 of the Inner Fane, p.133). I assume that, upon entering, everyone will look at the Obex, so everyone will have to do the Will saving throw. My questions are:
- What does exactly means to be "transfixed by it"? I mean, what happens to a PG while he's "transfixed"?
- If a PG fails the second save, his soul is absorbed and destroyed forever if it remains for more than 10 rounds in the Obex. Yes, but the text doesn't say a word on how it is possible to be free a soul while it's in the Obex! Reading that text, it seems that if a PG fails the second save, he's forever lost with no possibility of resurrection ("other than through divine intervention")!!! Wow, it seems a bit tough for a CR 6 "trap" that automatically "hits" everyone upon entering the room... the CR 15 Grand Altar seems like a joke! Am I missing something?
Thank you in advance,
Zarkan

Re: Tabernacle of Utter Darkness
transfix
3. To render motionless, as with terror, amazement, or awe.
There ya go
I imagine raise dead or resurrection would return the character's soul to its body, as would wish/limited wish/miracle.

Thank you for your reply.
1) So, I assume that a transfixed character can't do anything while he's in that state.
2) No, the text explicitly says that the soul is destroyed, and the character cannot be resurrected in any way (maybe only through a divine intervention).

Nothing wrong with going on a quest for your god to get that divine intervention.

A trip to the Solar in the CRM might be in order here.

I should have clarified - I was talking about using the spells before the soul was destroyed - before the 10 rounds are up.

That's exactly what Resurrection is in the first place...

Re: Tabernacle of Utter Darkness
The Tabernacle of Utter Darkness is extremely dangerous. If your players decide to go through it, particularly if the First or Third (or both) have retreated there, I wish them luck. Indeed, if the First is there and prepared for an attack, I can't see how to avoid a TPK without extraordinary luck.
Transfixed implies to me that they cannot take any actions. I would treat this as stunned, but not helpless. Moreover, the spirits within the pillars can try to take control of the body if the soul was absorbed into the obex.
The key point in the room, to me, is the violet fungus. If it is indeed huge, it can easily reach everything in the room and 10ft or so down the stairs. It likely doesn't attack until someone comes up the stairs though, waiting for them to look at the obex and perhaps make its job of guarding the Tabernacle easier. I worked up an alternate violet fungus in 3.5 rules.
PS What is a PG?
