I like the way you allowed the beholder to think with regards to who got what rays. IMC, the Outer Fane knows pretty well who the PCs are and can make very educated guesses as to the class composition (and therefore saving throw capabilities) of each PC.

Re: Update
You do not need a true ressurection for a dissentegration spell. A ressurection is enough as long as you can get some of the dust that is and the beholder might be smart enough to use his telekinesis (which he was using on the character anyway) to scatter it to the 4 wind directions. The dessintegrate spell is specificly mentioned in the ressurection spell description.

It looks like it was one nasty fight. They will definitely not underestimate beholders. Lets hope your characters do better next time ;)

Madfox,
whoes beholder in another adventure was hardly as succesfull (though the party of 9th lvl characters was fully buffed, healed and prepared and the battle took place in a 60 feet diameter area)

Re: Update
From what I could read, he was disintegrated on the other side of the WoF and the party needed to leave quickly (away from the curtain) so no dust was obtained. Anyway, a lost level at that high a level would be very painful to bear. As a party member, I would happily give up, say, a +2 weapon (or its equivalent) to have my friend true rezzed, but that's IMO. :)

Beholders
Ah!

You're right, I totally misunderstood what you were saying. Now that I understand, I think that was probably a good line of thought.

Big difference between fleeing through a Wall of Force and being able to fire through it with impunity! :)

Love the campaign log!

Especially on top of just losing a level the previous session! :P

I don't know about your copy of the MM, but mine says that beholders have an Intellegence of 17. I think that it's fair for Kex to bring whatever lethal means necessary to preserve its own hide.

RIP, Tsindin. Any idea what your total PC body count is so far?

BTW, your log is a great read and has inspired me in my just beginning campaign a lot.

Re: Update
There was a thread a while back about summarizing fatalities...I can try to find my post for it...there hadn't been any since then until Tsindin had two in a row.

The disintegrate happened on the PC's side of the WOF, and Lyssa DID recover some of the ash. Problem is, neither she nor Y'Day is capable of a Resurrect either...and I think getting killed twice in a row is more than Ang is ready to take. After all, she's the only player who's lost a given character twice, and this is now the second time for it (the poor Toran, first fatality of the campaign...first night. Later assassinated by Chat, and later still sacrificed by the Air Temple).

And yes...I do think they'll miss having a devoted Arcanist.

Wow, a very intense session, by the look of it. A serious downer there, although the good fight goes on. Thanks for posting the latest session. I do think not having a devoted Arcanist in the group will take some adjustment for all involved. I am curious as to how that will play out in later sessions.

Re: Update
And, just like that, it's almost over. And it's not looking good for the heroes.

Slow start. Ang didn't get her character written up over the week, so we spent two hours getting her put together, then ate dinner...all in all, a disappointing start. She's running a Wiz 7/Ftr 4/Arc. Arch 1.

A change in plans resulted in the group choosing to press forward, rather than turn back. They waited until the wall of force went down, found a vertical shaft blasted in the ceiling of the Fire Node transport room, guessed (correctly) that the Beholder was buggering out via disintegrate, and chose to head into the Fire Node.

From there, things just plain went quickly. Arriving in purple robes, the group was not harassed by the Salamander. They went the wrong way, wiped out a pair of bodaks, got lucky from coming close to falling in a Magma Pit, and fled from the illusion of the dragon.

Back to the Salamander room, Lyssa's patience ran out. She ordered the Salamander to direct them to the throne room, using the Mass Suggestion power of the Orb of Silvery Death...failed save, and directions given.

They then ran into four Fire Giants, under orders to stop them from coming down that hallway (by Lareth, who knows, now, that the OOSD is in the Node). One more Mass Suggestion later, and the Giants have returned to their rooms, waiting for the "real" troublemakers they were sent to watch out for.

So the PCs have rounded the corner, and are now face to face with Imix, Lareth and the Medusa. We ended session with a description of the scene.

So this is it! Next session will very likely be the last. Wish my players luck, for they will need it. They're going up against Imix underspelled, underprepped and exhausted. Only the new PC is at full.

Already discussed...next up for our bold adventurers is some post-game wrapup, the address to this site, and a group of 5th level PCs under "new management".

Yes, I'm finally getting a break from DMing on one of my gaming nights.

Re: Update
Do they have the opportunity to run? That might be their only chance, provided they grasp it.

Otherwise it sounds pretty good, although it was a bummer with the player not getting her character sheet done. I look very much forward to getting your players' perspective. And it might be fun for them to discover how prolific and - dare I say it? - respected member you are of this Community of Crackpots.

Re: Update
Well, I'll certainly steer them in this direction as soon as it's all over. I'm almost hoping they do choose to run immediately, though I don't know where they would go. Carrying the OOSD, I almost CAN'T not pursue and harass them, since Lareth knows where they are at all times.

As for tactics, I'll give them one obvious hint that I *want* them to stay, which will give them a chance to try and do exactly opposite. Lareth's first two actions will be to seal off both exits to the room with a Wall of Force. This, while Imix saunters forward slowly, confidently (and the Medusa cuts loose with spells). If they figure that anything the badguys want, they want to NOT happen, they may just make a run for it...but then what? I don't think the new Wizard has Rope Trick, I don't think they could secure a room in the Fire Node from intrusion, and alas, they do not have any means of exiting it now.

Wow, talk about being between a rock and a hard place. That's rough indeed. If there are no true options apparent other than fighting it out and hoping for some serious luck, then it will be the last fight, so to speak. I wish the group the best of luck and hope that they can come up with something to aid in their continued survival. This is like "watching" a cliffhanger tv episode. :)

Re: And the adventure resumes
I've thought of one desperation ploy. Varachan's still alive, well, and undiscovered. Perhaps I could help them along a bit by having Varachan have scried them just a few minutes prior, sneak up on Hedrack, snatch his Greater Tentacle Rod and make a run for it (probably showing wounds from being blasted by him as he ran). Booking for the Greater Temple at full speed, using the GTR to get into the Inner Fane, booking downstairs to the Tourbilion, and porting to the Recovered Temple. Again, booking like mad for the Fire Node, he comes up behind the group.

What's the point of all of these heroics? Well, it gives them one other target to suck up a couple of Imix's attacks, and it puts another +3 weapon into play for when he gets chopped down mercilessly. It's hardly a Deus-ex-machina, since he would be hard-pressed to beat up Lareth, but it might tip the scales in their favor, especially if someone shouts at Spud to pick up the GTR and beat on Imix with it instead of his +2 Greatsword.

Re: And the adventure resumes
Does the party recognize Varachan on sight? If not, he might become the target of everyone's first attacks, especially while wielding the GTR. I also don't see it as deus ex machina, and I like the idea. If you feel you need to use deus ex machina to some degree, however, perhaps this last heroic action (if successful, and it might not be) would be what is needed to atone for his past and become a full fledged cleric of Heironeous. :)

Btw, doesn't your party want to clear out the Inner Fane? How can this be The End?

Re: And the adventure resumes
I'm thinking of having him come 'round the opposite side, give the PCs an additional scare, have him pull aside his helmet with a "No, it's me", and have recognition set it (they have met him before).

And no, I don't think they intend to go after the Inner Fane. Once they have destroyed the two Orbs, they figure they've stopped the major plot, and that was what they were there to do. I'll put the idea out there, though, and see if they can be talked around to it.

Re: And the adventure resumes
Varachan is there to help facilitate a minor deus ex machina, I would not have too many quibbles about using him as such. Perhaps he poisoned Hedrack. Perhaps he cut a deal with Thrommel. IMO, decide what happens and then justify the background events. The game is all made up anyhow.

I think the point is, you have to give the players a fighting chance. In a single adventure, if the party goes one too many rooms and gets TPK'd it's not such a loss. But when you play for a year plus, it's going to be demoralizing if they get wiped out on round three. The odds need to get evened out a bit.

Here are some options:

1) Tip off the party that Imix can only be hurt by the Greater Tentacle Rod. Varachan screams something like "KNEEL BEFORE THE LASH OF YOUR MASTER!!" You could seriously amp up the power of the GTR so that when Spud gets it, it's doing like triple damage against Imix. Since they're low on spells and hit points, you could help them out a lot by upping their damage output. I would definitely change it so it somehow uses the wielders attack and damage bonuses and not the fixed values listed in the appendix. I'd definitely make it something on the order of a +8 equivalent weapon -- it needs to throw off some juice.

2) Varachan's repentance gets rewarded by the gods. You could have him regain some of his clerical abilities and arrive to aid the party. (St. Cuthbert would be all over this -- and I think we need a little more of the man with the cudgel in the adventure.) Alternately, his heroic death while fighting Imix could be recognized as the ultimate sacrifice and could release a wave of positive, good energy (healing the party and damaging their foes). Or he comes back as a ghost with some renewed clerical abilities. Basically, don't let him be such a lame duck and don't let his death go unrecognized.

3) Varachan has been planning for this emergency. He has a stash of equipment he's brought with him. Some refuge sticks, perhaps? A scroll of mass heal? Wands or weapons? If he's been able to hide his change of heart for this long, surely he could have squirreled away some magic items.

4) Imix has not reached his fully charged potential. He's still drawing power into himself from the Fire Node and therefore does not have the full stats laid out in the module. Maybe his DR is only +2. Maybe his Str is lower. Adjust as you see fit.

5) Show of force. Lareth seals himself, Imix, and Maliskra off from the party behind the wall of force. They then make a big show of buffing themselves to the gills (with Imix summoning several huge fire elementals, encircling them in a wall of fire, etc.) Lareth then demands that the party surrender. The only thing this does is buy time for the party to realize they are outgunned and need to run. If they don't realize that, they are screwed.

6) Collision of artifacts. Unexpected results happen when the Orb of Silvery Death and the Orb of Oblivion get this close together. Maybe a resonating field is set up which amplifies magic. Maybe a contest of wills takes place with the winner being able to dominate the possessor of the other orb. Maybe their hit points are melded into a shared pool and what harms one person also harms the other. There's a wild card here, and you can play it if you need to. Tharizdun is all about the chaos.

So there are some ideas. One little fly in the ointment is if Lareth seals the party in with a wall of force, how does Varachan get into the room?

Chew on that, hopefully something there will click. A brilliant guy I know once gave me some very important advice: "Remember, the heroes are SUPPOSED to win."

-Thrommel, who's just trying to pay an outstanding debt.
