Re: Into the Outer!
Well, that's one for the record books...they're still going.

First and foremost, I botched it. Ogres aren't Medium, and they aren't Humanoid (they're Giants). Thus, Spud is immune to Thrommel's Dominate ability. Fortunately, I found the error before any harm was done.

So it went like this:

Thrommel appears, and readies an action (When the Ogre charges, I sunder his weapon). Alas, Spud's weapon is +2, and Thrommels a mere +1.

Bethe strikes the Dire Bear with a Death Blow.

Inititiatives are rolled. Spud and the Dire Bear both roll hot. Spud charges, my sunder fails, he hits and dishes out a painful blow. The Dire Bear tears Bethe to pieces in one round (and successfully grapples the pieces, in case it matters).

Thrommel goes at the Ogre...and my dice betray me. One hit out of three, and that for minimum damage!

Everyone else comes charging out to see what happened.

Spud goes berserk and pounds Thrommel, knocking him down by 40 or so.

Thrommel turns to gaze at Lyssa, and she botches her save (a 4!). He then dodges Spud's AoO and flees 'round the corner, commanding Lyssa to hold her allies back.

Bryan (in Troll form...a Shifter, remember?) charges past Lyssa, who takes her AoO on him and misses.

Tsindin dumps a Dispel Magic into Lyssa, and manages to break the Dominate, right after she manages a second save (DP allows them) against dropping a Divine Storm on the rest of the party.

Spud and Bryan charge forward, only to see the Flesh Golems come lurching out of their alcoves on either side of Thrommel, just before he drops a Darkness.

Spud is a KILLING MACHINE! He drops a Flesh Golem in one round. Tsindin hurls a Daylight at the Darkness, dispelling it.

I do a bit of damage to Bryan (who regenerates it) and none to Spud (AC 30!). Thrommel goes bat and flees 'round the corner. I'd previously ruled that he had figured out a trick to wedge the doors only about 1' open, and left both doors to his room open "just in case". He goes flying through the door.

Spud drops the other Golem, and the others pursue. Tyra is in the lead (in tiger form), but has no Darkvision, so Thrommel's dark room slows her up.

Bryan shifts again...to Stirge form.

Through Thrommel's room, open the door to the Tentacle Trap. Tyra sees the symbol on the floor and abruptly stops, as does Lyssa, as does Tsindin.

Not Bryan...he goes flying in, sets it off, gets grappled, takes a bit of damage, and Tsindin (our lady of the Fireballs) burns the room and saves him.

Off again, and 'round the corner. Down the long hall, up two flights of stairs....and they stop to catch their breaths and regroup, assuming (correctly) that Thrommel has gotten away from them. He's flown into the heights of the Air Door area to recoup.

Forward, and into the Elemental room. Bashed down the four elementals (and the Salamander the druid summoned that was turned by the location). Decided to double back to check out "the double doors they saw earlier" (Greater Temple) and find a place to camp.

Tyra goes human again, reclaims her Eyepatch of See Invisibility, and spots something just 'round the corner at the far end of the long hall, on teh way back. Tsindin, of course, Fireballs it.

This was the Quasit from down south, the lead scout for Naquient's attack force. The party runs after it, rounds the corner...and comes face to face with the three Minotaurs, the two Nagas, and Naquient (who had longer-duration buffs pre-cast).

A fierce battle ensues in the Tentacle Trap and Thrommel's rooms. I nearly kill the Dire Tiger with massive blows from two Minotaurs (the third can't hit Spud). I nearly kill the entire party with no less than 7! fireballs from the Naga (thank Lyssa for the Mass Resist Elements as her first action). Naquient's Spell Immunity goes for naught, as Tsindin, for reasons unknown, switches to her never-before-today-used Lightning Bolt and blasts away, twice (once right through Spud's back).

Eventually, it all came down to three critical points.

1) Lyssa has burned her second of three Mass Heal scrolls, saving at least two PC's lives.

2) Spud natural-20ed his save against Naquient's Tharizdun's Touch (can't Hold Person...Spud isn't a Person!)

3) Bryan...little Bryan...latched onto the fleeing Naga, sucked out 4 Con worth of blood, spend a round regurgitating it while he clung to her with his claws, and plunged his little mosquito-nose right back in and kept on draining. Bryan rode the fleeing Naga almost back to the Assassin's quarters before eventually bringing her down, flying back with the deceased Caina's Necklace of Missiles in claw.

Session ended with them detecting a scry attempt on them (Varachan), having met back up over the corpses of the Flesh Golems, and Lyssa returning with a description of the room above the Infernal Machine.

Tune in next week to see which direction the party flees in, discover if they investegate the Greater Temple, the Infernal Machine, or just try to put up a Leo's Secure Shelter in Hedrack's room (back to the door).

And prepare for the next wave of attackers...the Drow, Hedrack, Chymon (reduced), Varachan, and a re-collected and Rebuked Thrommel.

How did he do that? Stirges drain at maximum 4 constitution points, probably because they cannot hold more blood then that. Or am I missing something?

*Spent a round regurgitating it*

He took what I am assuming was a full-round action to vomit back up all the blood he had just sucked up, meaning that next round his little tummy was all empty, ready for another 4-con worth of blood. >suck, vomit, repeat until dead:D

Re: Into the Outer!
Correct. A "natural" stirge, when full, would simply fly off and digest. Since he has his own intellect and will, I can see that he'd want to continue draining as an attack, but the "belly full" issue was also a concern.

Hence my ruling that he could spend a round to regurgitate the blood he'd drained and go back to draining more. It seemed to make the most rules-sense.

Just a small note that might be of interest.

Bats can squeeze through an opening as small as 1/4 inch. So Thrommel might have been able to fit under his door.

Re: bats
Which would work just fine...if the doors were of the normal variety. However, the Outer Fane doors are stone slabs that drop into the floor over the course of a full round, and then rise up to re-seal 3 rounds afterwards. It's not clearly stated anywhere how "tight" of a seal they make, but I'm assuming that it wouldn't be bat-sized.

Repeated Con draining via bulemia is a brilliant, even if it does have a somewhat twisted, dark, and vampiric edge to it. That could actually be a very effective tactic against a lot of BBEG's in the module.

You have some interesting characters in that game, Andorax! What do you think about Shifter, too powerful/weak or just right? And that Spud... :evil

So far, the Shifter hasn't bitten me too badly. He's fond of Troll form, which of course makes him rather safe from the whole damage thing, but he's only one of several.

I'll report anything that seems to be *too* out of hand as he goes up in levels, but thus-far, he hasn't made me regret it yet.

Spud, however, is really beginning to annoy me. I've nicknamed him "The Iron Ogre", and trying to hit that *%#*%)# 30 AC is genuinely frustrating. Yes, I know ways around it, I really don't want to start this into an extensive thread about dealing with high ACs. Also, it's a real trick trying to strike a balance between playing him as legitimately rock-stupid and not doing things that would suicidally get the party killed. Also, the player is growing frustrated with having to make all of his contributions to the game OOC.

Re: -
Well, they decided to make a run for it, and things got interesting.

I had made a last-minute change of plans, realizing that Hedrack would realize that they might run. I sent Chymon to perch over the earth door, invisible, to assault them and try to prevent their escape.

Obligingly, the party made their escape attempt. I dropped Chymon in right behind them and roasted the lot, and they broke into a run.

Amazing to see a high-level party turning all their powers and focus to evasion. Over the course of the retreat:

Tyra ran a little ways, wildshaped into a climbing lizard, scuttled underneith the bridge, and walked along beneath.

Lyssa did the same, using her slippers of spider climbing.

Tsindin did the same for a while, using her cloak of arachnidia, but eventually decided to Alter Self into a gill-and-webbed-hand form, drop into the Stalagos, and swim for it.

Bryan (the stirge) bravely CHARGED Chymon, and got grappled by the snatching AoO bite attack. And I critted. Another round of chewing later, and I'm flying over with him still grappled. He wild shapes again...into a Kuo-Toa (impossible to grapple), slips out, dives into the Stalagos, and swims for it.

Spud sucks down the potion Tsindin gave him (Expiditious Retreat), and goes charging down the causeway, hoping to run past the dragon.

The Dire Tiger and the Dire Bear go charging down the causeway (what else can they do)?

Chymon's first round is a full fly that nearly catches her up with the beasts. Her second lands her well ahead of everything, turning to face them (and losing a Kuo-Toa along the way). Third round injures a Dire Tiger. Fourth kills it outright. Fifth turns to fly down the Dire Bear that had slipped past her (failed at my bull's rush) and finish him off.

Sixth drops and badly wounds Spud (the Iron Ogre), who responds by crawling off the bridge about 40' from the end and holding his breath. Meanwhile, Bryan leaps out of the water, shifts again, and flys past in Hippogriff form.

So....Tsindin is underneith the end of the bridge, underwater. Spud just plopped into the water right by her. Bryan has gotten past Chymon and into the CRM complex, and Tyra and Lyssa are only halfway across on the underside of the bridge.

At this point, Chymon decides she had better take care of the one that escaped. Turning invisible, she uses her Bracers of Reduction and tracks the Hippogriff...only to find a lone troll wandering around (Bryan's last shift of the day).

I give it to him...honestly, he made a lucky call...and order the Troll (out of invisibility) to hunt down "a creature part horse, part bird...follow the scent of horseflesh and kill it!". Chymon had others to kill, and figured the Troll could handle it.

By then, however, Tyra had made her last shift of the day (Dolphin), and with Spud and Lyssa holding their breaths (with HUGE con bonuses), the lot of them made their way along the murky Stalagos, staying about 50' underwater along the side.

I rolled a couple horrid spot checks for Chymon, and the party managed to come to the Air Bridge safely.

We conclude session with both dire beasties dead, the rest of the party in the Earth Temple, and Bryan (the Troll) cowering in the southern parts of the Water Temple....and it's still not yet noon on the first day they entered the Outer Fane!

Heh, your players are quite clever... It's good thing, considering what they are fighting with. :evil

Our group has advanced to near fire temple and met the destrachans... Party rogue got her equipment toasted, but flying samurai and fighter smashed the beast to oblivion after that. Cleric handily turned Blade Spirit and they arrowed it to death with +4 arrows from 4 party members. Oh, and Victor and Ukemil had nice ambush, that dropped one party member to 1 hit point (cleric) and killed rogue (bad day for her...). Oh well, now they know who is sending these nasty people after them (Hedrack). Can't wait to see how they fare against Outer Fane...

And once again we have an aborted gaming session :(

I'm getting really sick of the people who make their employees work on Sunday, especially working long days when they've asked for that day, or even just that afternoon, off.

Just a quick question. Why didn't Bryan do anything to try to save his two animal companions? They all ran but left the Dire Bear and Tiger as bait for the dragon.

Re: -
Let me see if I can reconstruct it round by round for you, then...they weren't abandoned, if that's what you're thinking.

Round 1: Dragon roasts party, party lumbers into a run.

Round 2: Bryan bravely charged the Dragon (as a Stirge) and gets snacked on for his trouble. Entire party flees. Dire beasts (better movement) flee further. Dragon takes off, flying overhead.

Round 3: Brian slips out as a Kuo-Toa. Tyra slips under as a lizard. Lyssa slogs forward, Tsindin grows Gills, Spud charges ahead. Dragon flies past the run capabilities of the Dire beasts, and lands on the bridge.

Round 4: Brian and Tsindin are underwater. Lyssa and Tyra are under the bridge. Spud continues to plow ahead. The Dragon charges back towards the dire beasts, and smacks the Tiger for some damage. The dire beast hit back.

Round 5: Everyone's out of LOS of the fight save for Spud (still running for all he's worth). Chymon takes out the Dire Tiger in a single round's attacks. Dire Bear flees past Chymon in terror, and I fail my bull's rush.

Round 6: Everone's still out of LOS of the fight save for Spud (still running). Chymon flies past the Dire Bear again, landing in front of it, and finishing it off. Bryan puts in an appearance and flies past (in Hippogriff form), but at this point it's too late. Spud tries to flee past Chymon, but her AoO (trip) attack is successful this time, and she drops him like a stone.

If the two Druids had been on the bridge, watching as it happened, I'd be more upset about it. As it stood, the PCs played it like characters should...fleeing in abject terror before a Dragon.

Oh...and the Dire Bear was Bryan's companion of all of about two days (formerly abused by the Earth Bridge complex). The Dire Tiger was Tyra's companion.

Re: -
Yes and no...late start, coupled with a sudden and intense need to study ALL the books, led to nothing much happening this week.

They were reunited in the Water Temple (after Brian almost jumped on and assaulted Spud...he heard him coming 'round the corner, but didn't know who he was just yet). They made their way 'round the ring, past opening after opening, and each time heard the buzzing of Spider Eaters.

Lyssa peeked out the Fire Bridge opening, and saw the column of smoke, so they know Rastor is in flames (or at least have guessed properly).

They camped for the night in the Dwarven Shrine area, once again filling the entire corridor with a Leo's Secure Shelter (with it's back right at the pit entrance). Hours pass...I hit Tsindin with a sudden feeling of wrongness and a vision of a face in flames staring back at her. Imix has been released, and due to her affinity for fire, I wanted to give her a bit of a bone.

The next morning, she tried throwing out a Flaming Sphere, and it's tinged with purple and detecting as Evil. The same will be true of any fire within the CRM, and the next time they see the center, the tip of the Inner Fane is wreathed in flames, which will die down after 24 hours (ie, at next Midnight).

They tried to incinerate Hedrack's Vacuous Grimoire (that's what the Flaming Sphere was for), but as they didn't cast a Remove Curse, Lyssa will find it in her backpack again next time they camp. :evil

Then they sat down and started trying to figure out what their spell lists need to be changed to for tomorrow when they go to slay a Dragon. That took the rest of the evening.
